A
A2P

ACD

ALI

All-IP Voice Network
All-IP Voice Network is a network that is used for connection and communication purposes. The network uses internet protocol technologies to exchange information and establish communication with other networks and users. Analog Phone

ANI
Also known as automatic number identification, this service enables the person receiving the call to see the number of the person calling. The carrier of the service determines how this number is provided. Some services also allow ANI to be blocked.
API
API, also known as the application programming interface, is used to define interactions. These interactions can be either between software or hardware. Moreover, it acts as an intermediary that enables two applications to interact for a particular function. It fetches information and data used in an interface. APIs are particularly used to connect code components running on the same machine. Some examples include Google Maps APIs, payment integrations APIs, etc.
Appointment Reminder
An appointment Reminder is a form of a reminder that alerts or notifies a user about the upcoming appointment. These reminders handle the user responses through direct interaction with an existing user schedule. The consumer can quickly reschedule, edit, or remove the reminders by themselves.
Area Code Emergency Call Routing

ARU
An ARU (Audio Response Unit) is a computer telephony system that also integrates a system to store and forward your voice. A passive ARU will just play the message. Asynchronous Communication
This is a data communication method. In its case, you’re not using a synchronization clock signal for sending bits. All characters are sent with a bit that has its own start and stop point to show the beginning and end for all information pieces. It’s a much better way to send data while still getting control over the system and not dealing with problems.
ATA
ATA is an acronym for analog telephone adapter. This adapter can be used to connect an analog phone, or other similar device, to a digital telephone system. Businesses using VoIP may use this adapter so they can continue using their traditional analog telephone handset.
Attenuation
A term used by network professionals to describe a loss of signal strength. Attenuation may refer to both internal and external network problems. For example, a form of attenuation could include a damaged network cable or a broken Internet connection.
B
BAA
BAA is a business associate agreement. An agreement such as this enables organizations to conform to HIPAA regulations and forms a liability bond. When broken, the other party has legal recourse. BAA is essential for organizations in the medical industry.
Bandwidth
Bandwidth means the maximum rate at which data can be transferred across a specific path. It may also be paired with more in-depth terms, such as data bandwidth and digital bandwidth. Telephony services will state a maximum bandwidth for the transfer of data.
Barge
A barge, otherwise known as call barging, allows an external operator to jump into a call and speak to both the caller and receiver. This is helpful for managers who want to take a hands-on approach, or to help with customer service call training.
B-Channel
The B-channel stands for bearer channel and is the main channel used for sending the main data of a call, such as voice, video, and other services. It works together with the D-channel, which carries the main control information of a call.
Billing Telephone Number/Account Telephone Number
Billing Telephone Number or an Account Telephone Number is a unique service meant for the customers. This telephone number exists on the user or customers’ account, and it is used for identifying an account easily. It greatly facilitates the customers. BLI
BLI is also called busy line interrupt and may be sometimes referred to as emergency breakthrough. Available through landline phones, it allows the caller to interrupt another conversation. Usually, it requires the permission of the operator before it can be utilized.
BRI
BRI, known as basic rate interface, is a service level offered by an integrated services digital network. Basic rate interface comes with two B-channels and one D-channel for transmitting data. This type of service is designed for both home and small enterprise use.
Bridge Number
A bridge number is a destination telephone number within a conference bridge. Three or more people are able to access the same number at the same time. The most common type of bridge allows people to enter a virtual meeting room.

Carrier Identification Code

CDR

Centrex

CLEC

D
Data Network
A data network is an access point for the network and here data packages are sent and received from all over the network. These are sent to users to encrypt, store, use or access data. The size of a Data Network will differ, it can be very simple or complex. Usually this will have data switches, data connections, network links and system controls.
DECT
DECT is the universal standard for cordless telephone systems. Known as digital enhanced cordless telecommunications, this replaced the earlier phone standards. Originally created in Europe, DECT is designed to better support modern telecommunications systems.
DHCP
DHCP stands for dynamic host configuration protocol. It’s a type of network management protocol used on IP and UDP networks. The server will then assign an IP address and other parameters to each device. This allows the device to communicate with the IP network and other external IP networks.
DID
Known as direct inward dialing, or direct dialing inward in Europe, this feature provides an allocation of different phone numbers that’s associated with one or multiple phone lines. DID is designed for use with the subscriber’s PBX system.
Direct Routing
Direct routing is a highly preferred way of establishing a reliable connection between public switched Telephone Network PSTN and Microsoft team uses. Directory assistance
A service, enabling the users to access caller information via a database of phone numbers or other relevant contact information of any specific entity or organization.
Disputed Porting
Disputed porting happens when an end user’s number is ported out to a new carrier without legitimate approval or authorization. According to the guidelines provided by the Federal Communications Commission FCC, a new carrier is responsible for ensuring that the end-user authorizes the port request it is submitting.
DLR SMS
DLR SMS also referred to as delivery reporting or delivery receipt, is a feature that reports back the details of the success or failure of an outbound SMS. It acknowledges receipt of SMS or MMS messages. These delivery receipts are shared through a series of designated codes assigned to them.
DNIS
Dialed number identification service is a type of service most commonly associated with 800 and 900 numbers. It identifies the receiver of the call to the caller. So when a caller contacts one of these numbers, they’ll automatically know who is picking up the call.
Do not disturb (DND)
DND, known as the Do Not Disturb feature, enables the receiver to disable the audible ringing of a handset. Visual signs will still appear and it’s possible to answer the call, but there will be no audio signal.
DS3
A point-to-point circuit (P2P), also referred to as a digital signal level 3 T-carrier or T3 line. It is an Internet connection capable of providing high-speed bandwidth (Approx. 45 Mb). These interconnected circuits typically use a 75ohm coaxial cable along with BNC connectors. Digital signal 3 ensures that services are efficiently transported from origin to the intended user.
DSL
Digital subscriber line, formerly known as digital subscriber loop, are technologies involved with transmitting digital data. A DSL service may be paired with a wired telephone. DSL typically uses higher frequency bands for the transmission of data.
DTMF
DTMF stands for dual tone multi frequency and is the signal sent to your telephone company when you press the touch keys on your handset. This may be referred to as a touchtone phone. DTMF replaced pulse dialing.
Dual-Tone Multifrequency

E.164

Simply, FOC is related to the transfer of a port from one provider to another. It indicates that the number in question will be ported to the new or winning carrier at a certain date and time.
Frame Relay
The Frame Relay is a method for packet switching. However, it only relies on the bandwidth when it’s absolutely necessary. ILECs included GTE Corporation and the baby Bells companies which were formed when the American Telephone Telegraph company ATT was broken up in 1983.
Inbound Calling
Inbound calling is when a potential consumer or prospect initiates contact with your organization. Inbound calls are calls made to an organization’s support team by the consumer. This type of support is often referred to reactive support.
ISDN
ISDN means integrated services digital network. These are communication standards set for simultaneously transferring voice, video, and other data across the circuits used by the public phone network. It was initially invented in 1988 and is still widely in use today.
IVR
Interactive voice response is an automated system that can route calls, gather information, and interact with incoming callers. It may consist of pieces of hardware, software, a central database, and additional pieces of infrastructure. The complexity depends on the needs of the user.
Interconnection agreement ICA
ICA is a contractual agreement between different telecommunication service providers that defines the management and controlling of traffic exchange between those service providers.
International messaging
An international message is a source of fast and reliable communication with overseas consumers. This service enables consumers to establish overseas communications without any internet access.
IP PBX
The IP PBX is a private branch exchange used primarily with VoIP systems. It allows users operating on VoIP to switch between local lines. All users are enabled to share multiple external phone lines at the same time with IP PBX.
IP Phone
An IP phone, also known as a VoIP phone, allows calls to be made across an IP network. This is most commonly a call transmitted using an Internet connection, rather than the public phone network. It’s the foundation of VoIP services.
IRSF
International revenue share fraud is the most persistent type of telephone fraud that uses technical means to establish unauthorized calls to premium numbers. Individual fraudsters or fraudulent companies gain illegal access to expensive International phone numbers and sell them further to whoever pays them the highest.
ISP
An ISP (Internet Service Provider) is a company that offers you access to the internet based on a subscription to their services. Both companies and regular people can subscribe to this type of service. The ISP services are very dependable and professional, but they can be adapted to the customer requirements. Some of these services can also have additional features like unified messaging, website hosting and internet telephony.
ITSP
An Internet telephony service provider is a company providing telecommunications services using VoIP. Whenever a business purchases a type of VoIP service, they’ll be dealing with an ITSP. They may provide services to the end user or through wholesale channels to other VoIP service providers.
J
Jitter
Jitter is a phenomenon unique to IP networks. This is when a packet is flowing between two systems and there’s a difference in latency. It increases the time it takes to transfer the packet. Some reasons for this include route changes and high network usage.
L
LAN – Local Area Network
LANs are comprised of computers that are connected to each other in a dedicated group. LATA
A geographic area that is covered by one or more local telephone companies, that are legally referred to as local exchange carriers (LECs) is known as LATA or local access and transport area.
Latency
Latency is the time delay between when a speaker says something and when the listener actually hears it. Normally, the time delay is mere milliseconds, but when there are problems the delay is visible, thus leading to poor call quality.
Least Cost Routing
A process of finding the best and most inexpensive way of routing the phone calls is known as Least Cost Area or LCR. In this process, the path of outbound and inbound communications traffic is analyzed, selected, and directed depending on which path delivers the best rates.
LERG
LERG stands for local exchange routing guide. This is a type of database under the management of Telcordia. Information pertaining to NPA-NXX on the block level is provided through this database. It’s updated on a monthly basis and is based on the activity over the public phone network.
Letter of Authorization
The letter of confirmation is a kind of confirmation letter used to describe the authority, ability, rank of the particular person. This letter is bound with a legal contract that specifies the sum of responsibilities, duties, and power of the person. This letter is used to grant responsibilities to the trustable person. These responsibilities can be legal, business and health/medical or can be personal also. One important thing is that this letter consists of a certain time.
LIDB
LIDB is the abbreviation for Line Information Database. It is a record that the local telephone service providers keep and consists of several details for each customer. The categories that a Line Information Database includes are subscriber information, such as a service profile, name, address, and credit card validation information.
Live Chat
An online chat that is used between a business and someone who is visiting their site. This live chat appears as a pop-up on a site, and the visitor can interchange the messages in real-time.
LNP
